Redwood City: One arrested, gun recovered after dual chases

REDWOOD CITY — A 23-year-old Menlo Park man was in county jail after his arrest on multiple charges in connection with attempts to flee law enforcement separated by a weekend vehicle crash, authorities said.

Sheriff’s deputies on patrol tried to stop a vehicle shortly before 3:15 a.m. Sunday after noticing code violations. But the vehicle did not yield, and instead sped northbound along Middlefield Road “with wanton disregard for public safety,” according to a statement.

Moments later, deputies searching nearby saw two males running from the vehicle, which had crashed into a parked car near Pacific and Curtis avenues. After setting up a perimeter, officers took one man into custody and recovered a loaded firearm with an extended magazine.

While deputies began booking the man into jail, he “was able to remove his handcuff and fled out of the substation,” but was quickly caught and re-detained after a foot pursuit.

The man was then booked into Maguire county jail on suspicion of several charges, including felony evasion, carrying a loaded firearm and a concealed firearm in a car, possession of a large capacity magazine, having an unsecured firearm in a vehicle and misdemeanor obstruction and resisting arrest.

Deputies were working to identify and find the second male seen running from the vehicle, and anyone with information may call the sheriff’s anonymous tip line at 800-547-2700 and reference Case No. 23-00557.
