New England Patriots quarterback Brian Hoyer has been placed on the injured reserve, according to multiple reports, setting the stage for Bailey Zappe to get his first career start against the Detroit Lions, with Mac Jones unlikely to return to the field in time for the weekend.
NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport tweeted how the Patriots had put Hoyer on the IR Thursday, a move that came after the team announced he did not participate at practice as he continues to recover from a concussion suffered against the Green Bay Packers.
The #Patriots placed QB Brian Hoyer on IR, meaning Bailey Zappe is the full-time backup (or starter until Mac Jones is ready).

The backup quarterback started in Wisconsin after Mac Jones suffered a high ankle sprain the week before against the Baltimore Ravens.
When Hoyer was knocked out relatively early on, Bailey, the team’s third-string quarterback, made his professional debut. The rookie fourth-round pick from Western Kentucky went 10 of 15 for 99 yards, including a 25-yard touchdown pass to DeVante Parker.
